Elpida shares jumped 6 percent on the news. An Elpida spokesman said the shift to the 30-35 nanometre circuitry would help cut production costs by about 30 percent compared with 40-nanometre technology, boding well for the PC memory maker at a time when sluggish PC demand has been pushing down DRAM prices. Narrower circuitry allows semiconductor companies to create more storage capacity on silicon wafers, cutting per-chip production costs. A nanometre is a billionth of a metre. The spokesman said Elpida's new technology is the world's most advanced and would be ahead of Samsung's. Elpida shares were up 5.9 percent at 965 yen, outperforming a 0.9 percent rise in the benchmark Nikkei average .N225. (Reporting by Sachi Izumi; Editing by Michael Watson)
